Pterostyrax hispidus
fragrant speciesThe fragrant epaulette tree is multi-stemmed tree or shrub native to Japan and China, reaching up to 15m tall.
- Bark is gray-brown, with fine scaly interwoven ridges; branchlets initially are yellowish-brown glabrous, becoming silvery-brown with age.
- Leaves are papery, 8–16 cm long and 5–11cm broad, elliptic to obovate-elliptic, upper glabrous except veins sparsely stellate hairy, lower surface densely tomentose, stellate hairy, spreading hairs on midrib and veins, 7-10 secondary veins on each side of the midrib, margins shallowly serrated, teeth terminate with gland, apex abruptly acute; petiole is 0.7–2 cm long.
- Flowers are fringed, bell-shaped, creamy white, about 1 cm long, with narrow petals, arranged in panicles 13–26 cm long; stems are 0.1–0.2 cm long; flowering is in late spring.
- Fruit is a drupe to 2 cm long, densely stellate tomentose and with yellow spreading hairs, ripening in the fall.
