The Japanese wingnut tree is in the Juglandaceae family and is native to China and Japan. It grows up to 30 m in height.

  • Leaves are odd-pinnate, up to 20–25 (occasionally up to 40) cm long, with 11–21 leaflets with a 1.5 mm petiole, blades ovate-oblong, 6–12 cm long and 1.5–4 cm across, wooly pubescent along the midvein and secondary veins.
  • Fruiting spike is 20–30 cm long, axis pubescent; nutlets are 8–9 mm long, wings semiorbicular, 1.3–2.1 cm long and 0.9–1.8 cm across.
