Cyclocarya paliurus

wheel species

JuglandaceaeCyclocarya

Wheel wingnut is in the walnut or Juglandaceae family and is native to eastern and central China. It is a deciduous tree growing up to 30 m tall.

  • Foliage is similar to Pterocarya; leaves are alternate, pinnately compound, 20–25 cm long, with 5 to 11 leaflets which are 5-14 cm long and 2-6 cm across.
  • The species is monoecious. Male (staminate) flowers are produced in clusters of 3–5 (not singly as in Pterocarya); female (pistillate) flowers are solitary, terminal, along spikes 25–30 cm long, bearing several wingnuts with circular wings 2-5 cm in diameter right around the nut (instead of 2 wings at the sides as in Pterocarya).
