Platycarya strobilacea is in the Juglandaceae family and is native to eastern Asia. It grows up to 15 m in height.

  • Leaves are pinnate, 15–30 cm long, with 7–15 leaflets (although can go up to 23); leaflets are 3–11 cm long and 1.5–3.5 cm broad.
  • Flowers are catkins and bloom in June-July, with singular, erect males 2–8 cm long, in clusters of 4–8, surrounding an erect female catkin 2.5–5 cm long, superficially resembling a conifer cone with spirally arranged scales. Female cones are an unusual site remaining on the tree throughout the winter, falling to the ground in spring.
