The Chinese walnut is in the Juglandaceae family and is native to central and western China. It can reach up to 23 m in height.

  • Leaves are, pinnate and very large (60–90 cm long), with 11–17 short-pointed ovate-oblong, finely-toothed leaflets each 7–14 cm long and half as wide, dark green and downy above and paler with starry down underneath; mid-ribs have gland-tipped hairs like those of the main leaf stalk.
  • Species is monoecious. Male flowers are in pendulous catkins 23–38 cm long, produced in spring at the same time as the new leaves appear; female flowers have pink-red pistils; fruits are clustered at the end of stout a 15-cm stocks, egg-shaped and 3.8–4.2 cm long.
  • Fruit is a nut, pointed, 6-8 angled, angles spiny-toothed; green husk is 3-5 mm thick; nuts grow in bunches of 4–8 nuts With thick shells, they are of limited value for eating.
