Sophora microphylla
small-leaved speciesSmall-leaved Kōwhai is a small tree in the pea or Fabaceae family, native to New Zealand. It grows usually is 1–3 m tall but can grow up to 8 m in height.
- Each compound leaf is up to 50 cm long with up to 40 pairs of shiny oval, opposite leaflets, each 1.5–2 cm long. Leaves are semi-evergreen, the plant keeping some of its leaves over winter.
- Flowers are 1.8–5.0 cm long, pea-like, in clusters, in early spring.
- Seed pod is flat, black, up to 13 cm long.
- Bark is grayish, slightly cracked, with scattered lenticles.
