Pinus ayacahuite
Mexican white speciesMexican white pine or ayacahuite pine is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to southern Mexico and western Central America. It can grow up to 45 m tall.
- It is in the white pine subgenus (Strobus), with needles in bundles of 5 and 9–16 cm long, finely serrated, with a deciduous sheath, straight or slightly cured. They remain on the tree for 3 to 4 years. Branches generally are in yearly whorls.
- Species is monoecious; seed cones are 15-40 cm long and slender, cone scales thin and flexible, cones taking 2 years to mature; male pollen cones are ovoid, 7-10 mm long, yellow, turning orange-brown in tight clusters at ends of branches.
- Bark is thin, smooth, and ash-grey on young trees, with age becoming rough, gray-brown, divided into small rectangular plates. Branches are long, slender, spreading horizontally, lower branches often drooping. Twigs slender, smooth, light gray with foliage near the ends.
