Chinese white pine is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to China, from southern Shanxi west to southern Gansu and south to Yunnan, and also the island of Taiwan.

  • It is in the white pine subgenus (Strobus), with needles in bundles of 5, 8–20 cm long, serrulate in texture, bright green in color, triangular in cross section. They remain on the tree for 4 to 8 years. Branches generally are in yearly whorls.
  • Species is monoecious; male pollen cones are 1.5–2.5 cm long, greenish-white with a reddish tip, in spiral clusters at the base of new shoots; female seed cones are in 1 or 2, drooping, 2–3 cm long stems, 8–14 cm long, conical cylindric, often resinous, green, maturing to golden brown, falling after dropping their seeds.
  • Branches are in whorls; bark is smooth and gray-white when young, maturing to darken and become scaly, reddish brown, blackish brown to grayish red brown, covered by thin, loosely appressed small scales.
