Juniperus tibetica

Tibetan species

CupressaceaeJuniperus

Tibetan juniper is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native western China in southern Gansu, southeastern Qinghai, Sichuan, and Tibet, growing at high to very high altitudes of 2,600–4,800 metres.

  • The species is a shrub or small to medium-sized tree up to 15 m tall.
  • The leaves are of two forms, juvenile needle-like leaves 5 mm long, and adult scale-leaves 1.5–3.0 mm long on older plants with a green to blue-green color; they are arranged in opposite decussate pairs or in whorls of three.
  • Species is mostly monoecious. Female seed cones are berry-like, ovoid, 9–16 mm long and 7–13 mm in diameter, blue-black, containing a single seed, maturing in 18 months. The male cones are 1.5–2 mm long, and shed their pollen in early spring.
