Himalayan juniper is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native to the mountains of Central Asia, in northeastern Afghanistan, westernmost China (Xinjiang), northern Pakistan, southeastern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, western Nepal, northern Republic of India, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It grows at high altitudes of 1,550–4,350 metres.

  • It is a shrub or small tree, reaching up to 15 m tall.
  • Adult leaves are 1–2 mm long, scale-like, in decussate, opposite pairs or whorls of three; juvenile leaves are needle-like, 3–7 mm long on seedlings.
  • Species is largely dioecious; males are 3-5 mm long and shed their pollen in early spring; females are berry-like, but flattened, 4–6 mm long and , 4–8 mm across, blue-black and containing 2 or 3 seeds, maturing in 2 years, falling off when ripe.
