Savin juniper is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native to the mountains of central and southern Europe and western and central Asia, from Spain to eastern Siberia, typically growing at altitudes of 1,000-3,300 m. It is a shrub, reaching up to 4 m tall.

  • Adult leaves are 1–2 mm long, scale-like, on 0.8–1.0 mm shoots; juvenile leaves are needle-like, 5–10 mm long.
  • Species is largely dioecious; males are small (2-4 mm long) and shed their pollen in early spring; females are berry-like, 5–10 mm in diameter, blue-black covered with a whitish waxy bloom, maturing in 2 years, falling off when ripe.
