Temple juniper is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native to northern China, Korea, Japan, and the far southeast of Russia (Sakhalin and Primorsky Krai), occurring at altitudes up to 2,200 m.

  • The species is a shrub or small tree up to 10 m tall.
  • The leaves are needle-like, bright green to yellowish green, 1–2.3 cm long and 1–1.3 mm broad, arranged in whorls of three, with a single stomatal band on the surface.
  • Species is dioecious. Female cones are berry-like, green 5–9 mm in diameter, maturing to dark purple or brownish with a variable whitish waxy coating in about 18 months; pollen cones are yellow, 3–5 mm long, falling soon after shedding their pollen in early spring.
