Juniperus pseudosabina
Turkestan speciesTurkestan juniper or dwarf black juniper is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native the mountains of Central Asia in northern Pakistan, northeastern Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, eastern Kazakhstan, western China, western Mongolia, and south-central Russia, at altitudes from 2,000–4,100 metres.
- The species is a large shrub or small tree up to 10 m tall.
- The leaves are of two forms, juvenile needle-like leaves 4–8 mm long and 1 mm wide on seedlings, and adult scale-leaves 1.3–2.0 mm long on shoots 1.5–2.0 mm thick on older.
- Species is mostly dioecious although occasionally plants are monoecious. The female cones are berry-like, 8–14 mm long, 7–10 mm in diameter, blue-black with a whitish waxy bloom, containing a single seed, maturing in 2 years. The male cones are 2–3 mm long, and shed their pollen in early spring.
