Cupressus goveniana
California speciesCalifornia western cypress or Gowen cypress is a member of the cypress or Cupressaceae family native to California, USA, specifically the Monterey Peninsula on the Central Coast. It occurs with Monterey cypress (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa) and has an ovoid- conic crown and can reach a height of up to 50 m tall.
- Foliage is dark green to somewhat yellow-green, in dense sprays, scale-like, 2–5 mm long, on rounded (not flattened) shoots.
- Seed cones are round to oblong, 11–22 mm long, with 6 to 10 scales, green at first and maturing to brown after 2 years; they are serotenous (remain closed for many years), opening after wildfire; cones are typically smaller than those of H. macrocarpa. Male cones are 3–5 mm long and release pollen in February/March.
