Laurus nobilis
bay speciesBay laurel or bay tree is in the laurel or Lauraceae family and is an evergreen shrub or tree native to the Mediterranean region. It sometimes reaches up to 18 m tall.
- Leaves are alternate, simple, glossy, thick green, 6–12 cm long and 2–4 cm across, untoothed (occasional wavy margins), aromatic when crushed, being used for bay leaf seasoning in cooking.
- Species is monoecious. Female flowers are pale yellow, about 1 cm in diameter, clustering in multiple pairs at the bases of leaves and close to the tips of branches.
- Fruit is a small, shiny black berry-like drupe about 1 cm long containing one seed.
