Chinese cypress or Yunnan cypress is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native China in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. It grows in mountain forests, particularly in deep gorges, reaching up to 25 m tall.

  • Crown is conical when young, rounded or broadly domed when old. Branches are slender and horizontal, densely arranged, branchlets spreading or drooping but not pendulous, thin.
  • Leaves are closely pressed to the twigs, slightly glaucous underside, 1–2 mm long on branchlets.
  • Species is monoecious. Pollen cones are globose or oblong, 5–7 mm long; seed cones are round, greenish, turning greenish-clue, maturing to dark brown or purplish brown when ripe, 1.5–3.0 cm in diameter, with 8–10 cone scales.
