King Billy pine species

CupressaceaeAthrotaxis

King Billy pine is a conifer in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is endemic to the island state of Tasmania in Australia. It is an evergreen coniferous tree growing up to 30 m tall.

  • Crown is conical; bark is orange-red, soft and spongy, slightly furrowed, exfoliating in long strips. In exposed conditions, trunk is often twisted, shrub-like. Branchlets are upright and smooth, tufted near the crown, and are bright light green in color.
  • Leaves are awl-shaped, spirally arranged, curving inward, pointed, 8–13 mm long, shiny green in colour.
  • Species is monoecious. Male pollen cones are at the ends of short branchlets, with 2 pollen sacks; seed cones are round, 1.5–2.5 cm long, on a peduncle 2-3 mm long, orange at first, turning brown; they have 20–30 helically arranged, thin woody, triangular scales.
