Pencil pine is a conifer in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is endemic to Tasmania, an island state of Australia. It is found as either an erect shrub or a tree, growing very slowly, reaching up to 20 m tall and sometimes living up to 1,000 years old.

  • Leaves are scale-like, 3–6 mm long 2–3 mm across, arranged spirally on the shoots.
  • Species is monoecious. Male pollen cones are 3–5 mm long; seed cones are globose, 10–16 mm in diameter, with 10 to 16 spirally-arranged scales, maturing in about six months.
