Picea maximowiczii
Japanese bush speciesJapanese bush spruce is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to Japan; its range is limited to Akaishi Mountains, Okuchichibu Mountains and the Yatsugatake Mountains on Honshu Island. It can reach up to 30 m tall.
- Leaves are needle-like, linear, rhombic (4 sides all equal length), 1–2 cm long, sharp-pointed, deep green with a stomatal groove on each surface; needles are on short, stout pegs (sterigmata).
- Cones are pendulous, non-fragmenting, oblong, 4–7cm long and 2 cm across, brown when ripe, with thin, woody rounded scales 7–13 mm long and wide.
- Bark is gray-brown, fissured, peeling off in thick scales.
