PinaceaeAbies

Bulgarian fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to the Balkan Peninsula in Bulgaria, Northern Greece, the Republic of Macedonia, Albania and Serbia. It grows between 800-1,800 m above sea level, attaining a height of 50 m. Some botanists treat it as a hybrid between European silver Fir (A. alba) and Greek fir (A. cephalonica).

  • Its crown is conical, becoming flattened in older trees.
  • The leaves are needle-like, flattened, spirally arranged but oriented upwards and to the sides, 1.8–3.0 cm long and 2 mm broad, glossy dark green above and 2 bluish white stomatal bands underneath, apex usually pointed but sometimes notched.
  • Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
  • The species is monoecious; pollen cones grow laterally and crowded along the shoot, 2 cm long, greenish yellow with purple-red microsporophylls; seed cones are tapering, cylindrical, 10–21 cm long and 4 cm broad, with 150-200 scales; colour is yellow-brown, maturing to brown. Cones are upright and have excerted (protruding), green reflexed bracts; they fragment in the fall, dropping winged seeds and leaving exposed central stems.
  • Twigs are slender, flexible, yellow-gray, striated with short yellow or brown pubescence.
