Abies cephalonica
Greek speciesGreek fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to the mountains of Greece and is closely related to Bulgarian fir (Abies borisii-regis) and Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana). It is a medium-sized conifer reaching a height of up to about 35 m.
- Needles are flattened, 15–25 mm long, 2 mm wide, glossy dark green, usually sharply pointed but sometimes blunt-tipped on older trees, arranged spirally on the shoot.
- Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
- The species is monoecious; seed cones are erect, 12–16 cm long, 4 cm broad, brownish-red, with short, erect, triangularly pointed bracts extending beyond the scales.
- Buds are conical or ovoid, resinous, violet to reddish
