Abies fabri
冷杉 Faber's speciesFaber's fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to Sichuan province in western China. It can grow to over 40 m tall.
- Crown is conical to broadly columnar.
- Needles are 1.3–3.0 cm long, 1–2.5 cm wide (i.e., moderately short, fat), glossy dark green above, tips with slight notch, and with two white stomatal bands below with leaf margins turning up to expose the whitish undersides.
- Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
- The species is monoecious, with a pollen cone which is 9 mm long, purplish; seed cone is upright, cylindrical or elongated egg-shaped, 7–10 cm long and 3–4 cm across, initially green and maturing over summer to bluish-gray, resinous. Cones are fragmenting, disintegrating to release the winged seeds in September (unlike spruce cones which fall from the tree intact).
- Buds are oval, resinous, 9 mm long; bark is flat gray, with small resin pockets, becoming furrowed with age.
