Pterocarya stenoptera

Chinese species

JuglandaceaePterocarya

The Chinese wingnut is in the Juglandaceae family and has a native range of southeast China. It is quite similar to the Caucasian wingnut tree, differing most distinctly in the shape of the double wings which look like the wings extending on the back of the common fly, on two different planes.

  • Leaves are alternate, pinnately compound, with 11–21 toothed, unstocked leaflets.
  • Species is monoecious. Flowers form male and female pendulous catkins on the same plant in spring, males green and drooping, females reddish and more upright.
  • Fruit is a small nut with two wings, hanging on catkins up to 30 cm long, most dropping before new leaves appear in the spring.
  • Leaf scars are 'happy face', like other species in the Juglandaceae family.
  • Pith is light brown, chambered.
