Tsuga ulleungensis

Ulleungdo species

PinaceaeTsuga

Ulleungdo hemlock is in the pine or Pinaceae family and has a very local native range, limited to Ulleungdo Island, Korea.

It is a newly discovered temperate coniferous species identified recently by an international team led by Garth Holman at the University of Maine. The species resembles T. seiboldii, with hairless branches.

However, Ulleungdo hemlock has larger leaves, wider petioles, larger leaf notches, buff-colored stomatal bands, smaller resin canals, and distinct wavy margins to their cone-scale bracts.
