Abies numidica

Algerian species

PinaceaeAbies

Algerian fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to Algeria, specifically an area on Mounts Babor and Talahor in the Kabylie range, from 1300 to 2000 m altitude. It grows to a height of about 35 m. It is closely related to Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo).

  • Trees can reach 25 m tall; tree crown is broadly conical, branches spreading horizontally.
  • Leaves are needle-like, moderately flattened, 2.5–3.7 cm long, 2 mm broad, glossy dark green above, with a patch of greenish-white stomata near the tip above and with two greenish-white bands of stomata below. The tip of the leaf is usually pointed but sometimes slightly notched, particularly on slow-growing shoots on older trees. Needles are arranged spirally on the shoot, twisted to be above the shoots. Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
  • The species is monoecious. Seed cones are upright, fragmenting, 15–20 cm long and 3.5-5.5 cm broad, glaucous green with a pink or violet tinge, maturing brown. Bracts on each seed scale are short, do not protrude; cones disintegrate at maturity of late autumn, releasing 2 winged seed from each cone scale.
  • Buds are ovate, large, dark brown, sometimes resinous; bark on young trees is smooth, gray, becoming scaly and fissured with age.
