Pterocarya fraxinifolia
Caucasian speciesThe Caucasian wingnut tree is in the Juglandaceae family and is native to the Caucasian region (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey). It grows up to 30 m in height.
- Leaves are alternate, pinnately compound, up to 60 cm in length, with up to 27 toothed, unstocked leaflets up to 15 cm long and 4 cm across.
- Species is monoecious. Flowers in the spring are green male drooping catkins up to 12 cm long and even longer female catkins with small red flowers. By fall, they develop into strings of double-winged nuts up to 30 cm long, connected pairs in the same plane in a bulging heart shape, which ripen and fall of by early winter, turning dry brown over the winter.
- Leaf scars are 'happy face', like other species in the Juglandaceae family.
- Pith is light brown, chambered.
