Abies delavayi
Delavay's speciesDelavay’s fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to Yunnan Province in southwest China and bordering areas in southeastern Tibet, far northeastern India, northern Myenmar and far northwestern Vietnam. It grows at high elevations (over 3,000 m) up to the the tree line, reaching a height up to 40 m tall.
- Needles are 1.5–3.0 cm long and 1–2 mm broad, flattened, pointed or blunt tipped, slightly knotched, the upper surface as glossy dark green with no stomata, and a vivid snow-white underside, with the stomata densely covered in white wax; margins of the needles are rolled-down (revolute).
- The species is monoecious; pollen cone is 1–2 cm long, reddish, seed cone is dark purple-blue, 6–12 cm long and 3.0–4.5 cm wide, with numerous small scales and protruding (exserted) bracts. Cones fragment in the fall when mature, dispersing winged seeds.
- Shoots are purple-brown to dark brown; buds are oblong-ovoid, 4–5 mm long, resinous. Bark is smooth, gray or red-brown on younger trees, with resin pockets, bark darkening to black-brown and becoming deeply longitudinally fissured with age.
