Abies durangensis
Durango speciesDurango fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to the Durango, Chihuahua and Sinaloa areas of Mexico, growing to a height of up to 30 m.
- Needles are 2.0–3.5 cm long and 1.0–1.6 mm wide, flattened, grooved and bright green above, keeled and glaucous below, pointed or blunt-tipped, nearly 2-ranked. Leaf scars are suction cup-like in appearance.
- The species is monoecious; pollen cone is 1–2 cm long, reddish, seed cone is ovoid, apex pointed, brown, 5–10 cm long and 3.5–4.0 cm wide, hidden bracts. Cones fragment in the fall when mature, dispersing winged seeds.
- Buds are oblong-ovoid, 4–5 mm long, resinous. Bark is smooth, gray or red-brown on younger trees, with resin pockets, bark darkening to black-brown and becoming deeply longitudinally fissured with age.
