Abies kawakamii
台灣冷杉 Taiwan speciesTaiwan fir the pine or Pinaceae family is native to the higher mountains of Taiwan, usually forming pure stands. It grows to a mature height of only 16 m.
- Needles are linear, flat, 1.0–1.5 cm long, dark green above, whitish below, with some stomata on the upper surface near the rounded or notched apex. They are attached to the twig at a base resembling a small suction cup.
- The species is monoecious. Pollen cones are cylindrical, up to 1.5 cm long. Seed cones are upright, oblong to cylindrical, 6–7.5 cm long and 3.5–4 cm broad, maturing purple. The cones disintegrate at maturity in the fall, releasing winged seeds.
- Buds ovoid, very resinous, brown to reddish with obtuse scales, up to 1 mm in diameter. Bark on young trees is gray-white, smooth and resinous, becoming gray-brown and scaly on older trees.
