Guatemalan speciesGuatemalan fir is a North American fir in the pine or Pinaceae family native to Central America, from Mexico to Honduras and El Salvador, growing in tropical coniferous and mixed forests. It reaches a height of up to 35 m tall, with a conical crown.
- Needles are nearly all in one plane, unequal in length, deep green above, waxy in texture underneath, 1.5–5.5 cm long, 1.2–2.5 mm wide. Stomata are absent above but appear in 8–10 lines below; apex is notched. Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
- The species is monoecious; seed cones erect, are 8–11.5 cm long and 4.0–4.5 cm wide, oblong-cylindric, apex pointed to somewhat flattened, yellowish brown in colour; bracts are hidden. Cones fragment in the fall, dispersing their seeds.
- Twigs are slender, buds ovoid, resinous, 5 mm in length; bark is blackish brown, dividing into plates.
