Abies holophylla
Manchurian speciesManchurian fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to parts of the Koreas and China and Russia in areas bordering the Sea of Japan that are close to Vladivostok. It can grow to over 30 m tall.
- Needles are 2–4 cm long, bright green, flattened, pointed (no indentation), spreading on 2 sides at right angles from the shoots, twisting up. Needles are bright green above and whitish-green below with 2 whitish strips formed by 7–10 wax-covered stomatal bands.
- Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
- The species is monoecious, with a male pollen cone which is small and inconspicuous, 9 mm long; seed cone is upright, 12–14 cm long and 4–5 cm across, yellowish-green, slightly tapering with a bluntly rounded apex; scale bracts are hidden under the cone scales. Cones are fragmenting, disintegrating in October to release winged seeds.
- Buds ovoid, resinous, brown to reddish with obtuse scales, 4–8 mm long. Bark is scaly and gray-brown with resin blisters.
