The New Mexican locust is a small, spiny shrub of tree native to the southwestern United States. It can grow up to 8 m in height.

  • Leaves are deciduous, alternate, odd-pinnately compound, 10–15 cm long, 13–21 leaflets, blades elliptic-lanceolate, apex obtuse to rounded, length 1.9–3.75 cm, finely hairy bristles on both sides; leaves have a pair of sharp, reddish-brown thorns at the base.
  • Flowers in dense racemes 5–10 cm long that hang from the branches near the ends, pods glandular-hairy; flowers showy and white or pink; blooms are produced in spring or early summer.
  • Fruit is a brown bean-like pods with bristles like those on the shoots.
