The green bottlebrush is in the myrtle or Myrtaceae family and is indigenous to Tasmania in Australia. It is a small to medium shrub mostly growing in subalpine areas, reaching up to3 m in height.

It now has been renamed Melaleuca virens.

  • Leaves are evergreen, alternate, 1.4–3.7 cm long and 1.8–5 mm wide, flat, elliptic to lance-shaped, tapering to a sharp point; mid-vein is visible but side veins are indistinct.
  • Flowers are yellow to greenish-yellow, arranged in spikes at the end of branches; spikes are 4–6 cm long, 3–5 cm in diameter, with 20–80 individual flowers; petals are 2.6–4.9 mm long. There are 19-36 stamens in each flower, sometimes arranged in 5 groups, with their "stalks" (the filaments) forming the "bottlebrush". Flowering occurs from November to May.
  • Developing fruit is a woody capsule, cup-shaped, round, 4.5–6.0 mm long, in cylindrical clusters along the stem.
