Eucalyptus pauciflora

Jounama snow gum species

MyrtaceaeEucalyptus

The Jounama Snow Gum Tree or white sallee is in the myrtle or Myrtaceae family and is native to the subalpine (forming the tree line in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory) and lowland habitats of eastern Australia.

It is a large shrub or small tree reaching generally up to 10 m in height; it is the most cold-tolerant species of eucalyptus.

  • Leaves are evergreen, alternate and lanceolate to broad lanceolate, gray-green, with distinct parallel veins.
  • The tree is covered with a mass of white flowers in the spring; They have no petals but have fluffy, showy stamens, enclosed in a cap called an operculum (composed of fused sepals or petals, or both).
  • Fruit is a woody, cup-shaped capsule with a wide, flattened disc, opening to release seeds.
  • Bark is smooth and light grey to white, sometimes brown-red, shedding in patches or strips to give a mottled appearance.
