Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii'

Voss's species

FabaceaeLaburnum

Most laburnums found in gardens are Voss's laburnum which is a hybrid between two species, combining the longer racemes of L. alpinum with the denser flowers of L. anagyroides; it also has the benefit of low seed production.

  • Leaves are alternate, generally trifoliate and oval with long petioles, smooth on the upper side and hairy on the underside.
  • Species is monoecious. Flowers bloom in late spring and are pea-like, golden yellow, densely packed in pendulous racemes 10–30 cm long.
  • Fruit is a flat seed pod hanging in clusters, initially green but turning brown in the fall. It has large numbers of black seeds that contain cytisine, an alkaloid extremely poisonous to humans as well as goats and horses, especially when not ripe.
  • Twig is moderately stout, buds thick, grayish-brown, slightly pointed.
