PinaceaePicea

Sakhalin spruce is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to Russia (the southern Sakhalin and the Kurile islands) and Japan (Hokkaido and northern Honshu islands). It can grow to a height of 30 m.

  • The crown of a mature tree is pyramidal to conical, presenting long, with narrow branches which spread short and horizontally.
  • Needle-like leaves are linear, slightly curved, 4-sided, 8–12 mm long and 1 mm thick, pointed, with 2 distinct white stomatal bands on upper surfaces, 2 indistinct lines on the lower surfaces. Needles are on pegs (sterigmata) which are covered with fines hairs.
  • Pollen cones are cylindrical, downward-facing, 7–14 mm long and 4 mm across, red-brown in color with slender stocks. Seed cones are non-fragmenting, cylindrical, 3–5 cm long and 2–2.5 cm across when closed, red-purple when young, maturing to brown in September. Cone scales are 8–10 mm long, thin, orbicular-obovate.
  • Bark is gray-brown, fissured, peeling off in scales.
