Picea alcoquiana
Alcock's speciesAlcock’s spruce is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to central Honshu island in Japan, at elevations of 1,500 – 2,000 m above sea level in subalpine forests. It grows up to 40 m tall.
- Leaves are needle-like, rhombic (4 sides all equal length), 12–22 mm long, spirally arranged on the branchlets, acutely pointed on young trees, slightly pointed on mature trees; they are on short pegs (sterigmata).
- Pollen cones are 10–15 mm long, red in color at first, later turning yellow, with numerous stamens. Seed cones are pendant, non-fragmenting, cylindric, 4–8 cm long and 2 cm across, pale brown, with stiff, smoothly rounded scales.
- Bark is purple-brown, smooth to scaly on young trees, maturing to gray-brown, fissured and peeling off in thick scales.
