Northern sargent spruce is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to China, northern Burma and the Assam Himal of India. It grows up to 50 m tall.

  • Leaves are pointed, needle-like, rhombic (4 sides all equal length), 12–22 mm long, spirally arranged on the branchlets, slightly curved or straight, and flattened, directed forward and can be closely pressed along upper sides of branchlets, spreading and almost parallel on lower side needles are on short pegs (sterigmata, or pulvini).
  • Branchlets are pendulous, pale yellow or brownish yellow in color, turning brownish yellow or brown, and finally gray.
  • Needles are 1.0–2.5 cm long and 1–1.5 mm thick, slightly keeled on both sides, with 5 to 7 stomatal lines in each of 2 white bands.
  • Seed cones are initially green, then red and maturing to dull brown or brown-tinged purplish, ovoid-oblong shape, 6–10 cm long and 3–4 cm across. Seed scales have an obovate-oblong or rhombic outline, 1.4–2.2 cm long, 1.1–1.3 cm across) and usually bent backward (recurved).
  • Bark is gray or gray-brown in color and longitudinally fissured into thick, square plates, irregularly flaking.
