The bristly locust, rose-acacia or moss locust is a shrub in the pea or Fabaceae family and is native to the southeastern United States, growing up to 3 m tall. Branches, petioles, flower stalks and fruits are hispid (having stiff hairs).

  • Leaves are alternate, pinnately compound, with 9–13 elliptical leaflets 15–20 cm long.
  • Flower is pea-like, pinkish and hanging in clusters in the spring.
  • Twig is zizag, covered in bristly reddish hairs; buds are hidden. Twigs do not have spines.
  • Seed pod is flat, up to 5–7 cm long and covered in bristly hairs.
