The Tasmanian Snow Gum Tree is in the myrtle or Myrtaceae family and is indigenous to higher elevations in Tasmania. It can reach up to 15 m in height.

  • Leaves are evergreen, alternate and lanceolate, usually glaucous, yet still green, with a characteristic crimson hook at the tip.
  • Flower buds are usually very glaucous, ribbed and possess a wrinkly operculum, which is shed when the inflorescences emerge. The buds generally occur in groups of greater than 7.
  • Flowers have no petals but have fluffy, showy white stamens, enclosed in a cap called an operculum (composed of fused sepals or petals, or both).
  • Fruit is a woody, cup-shaped capsule with a wide, flattened disc, opening to release seeds.
  • The bark is smooth and light grey to white, with streaks of tan.
