Juniperus squamata
flaky speciesFlaky juniper or Himalayan juniper is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native to the Himalayas and China. It is a coniferous evergreen shrub or small tree reaching up to 10 m in height.
- Needles are broad awl-shaped, needle-like, 3–9 mm long, arranged in six ranks in alternating whorls of three, blue-green to gray-green in colour. Each needle has a gray-white band.
- Species is largely dioecious (pollen and seed cones on separate plants); males are small (3 mm long), reddish brown terminal cones. Female cones are berry-like, globose to ovoid, 4–9 mm long and 4–6 mm diameter, glossy black, and contain one seed; they are mature in about 18 months.
- Bark is flaky brown.
