Rocky Mountain juniper is in the cypress or Cupressaceae family and is native to western North America. It is a medium tree reaching up to 20 m tall.

  • Shoots are slender; leaves are small (3 mm long) scale-like, in desiccate pairs (occasionally whorls of 3), and tight against the branches, green to gray-green. Juvenile leaves (on young seedlings only) are needle-like, 5–10 mm long.
  • Species is dioecious; both males and females are small (3 mm long), reddish brown terminal cones; females mature into larger, round, bluish berry-like cones up to 9 mm in diameter, covered in bluish-white waxy bloom.
  • Bark is thin, quite scaly with long narrow ridges, reddish brown but turning gray with age.
