The Persian silk tree is a member of the legume family Fabaceae and is native to southwestern and eastern Asia.

  • Leaves are alternate, bi-pinnately compound, 25—50 cm long; leaflets are small, narrow, about 9 cm long. Leaves slowly close during the night and during periods of rain, leaflets bowing downward.
  • Distinct flower inflorescences with long pink stamens are produced throughout the summer.

  • Twigs are slightly zigzag; buds are buried. Branches have thick, stubby appearance in winter, with absence of small branches.
  • Seed pods are drooping, to 15 cm long.
