The epaulette tree is native to central China. It is in the same styrax or Styracaceae family as snowbell (Styrax japonicus) and silver bell (Halesia carolina). It is a small tree growing up to 15 m tall.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, up to 15 cm long and 19 cm across, oblong-elliptic, hairy on the underside.
  • Flowers are small, white, 12–14 mm long with narrow petals, produced on panicles up to 15 cm long.
  • Fruit is short, up to 2 cm long gray-green pods covered with yellow-brown bristles, hanging in panicles.
