Chinese hemlock is in the pine or Pinaceae is native to China at between 2000 and 3500 m in elevation. Crown is broadly conical; it grows to a height of about 9 m.

T. sinensis (i.e., T. chinensis var. forrestii).

  • Tree form is a dense pyramid, often with a drooping leading shoot; it is very shade-tolerant.
  • Needle-like leaves are up to 1–2.5 cm long, glossy dark green, furrowed above, straight or curved, appearing 2-ranked, weakly grooved, with 2 stomatal lines on the bottom, blunt tipped.
  • Species is monoecious; pollen cones are 3–5 mm long; seed cones are pendant, up to 2 cm long, sessile (no stems), ovoid-oblong when closed, opening to 1.4 cm; they are numerous on outer branches of crown, greenish-purple ripening light brown.
  • Buds are globular, 2–3 mm in diameter, slightly resinous, brown; bark rough, scaly, orange-brown, becoming brown-grey and furrowed on older trees.
