The Siberian peashrub or caragana is a member of the pea or Fabaceae family and originally is native to Siberia, parts of China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan.

It was brought to North America by early European immigrants and is now found throughout much of the continent.

  • Leaves are alternate, pinnately compound, up to 10 cm long, 8—12 oval leaflets up to 2 cm long.
  • Flower is pea-like, bright yellow, single or in clusters in late spring.
  • Fruit is a long, narrow, pointed pod, up to 5 cm long, maturing from green to brown by fall, curling after it splits to release 3—5 seeds.
