West Himalayan spruce is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to the western Himalaya mountains, from Afghanistan to India and Nepal. It grows together with deodar cedar (Cedrus deodora) and can reach up to 60 m tall.

  • Leaves are needle-like, rhombic in cross-section and 3–5 cm long, the longest of any spruce. They are mounted on short pegs.
  • Branches are attractive pendulous.
  • Cones are pendulous, non-fragmenting, broad cylindric, 9–16 cm long and 3 cm broad, opening to 5-6 cm broad.
  • Bark is pale brown with irregular plates.
