Tiger tail spruce is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to moist maritime climates in Japan. It can reach up to 30 m tall.

  • Leaves are needle-like, stiff, hard, very sharp-pointed, quadrangular, 15–20 mm long and 2.5 mm across, with lighter green undersides of needles.
  • Seed cones are pendant, non-fragmenting, egg-shaped, 7–10 cm long and 4–4.5 cm across.
  • Bark is grey-brown, deeply fissured and peels off in scales.
