Ulmus americana
American speciesAmerican elm is a member of the elm or Ulmaceae family and is native to eastern North America, from southern Alberta to Nova Scotia and south all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. It is highly susceptible to Dutch elm disease which has eliminated populations in many areas.
- Leaves are 7–20 cm long, alternate, ovate, double-serrated, oblique leaf base, 15-20 vein pairs.
- Twigs are zigzag, all in one plane.
- Buds rounded, flattened against twig.
- Fruit is a single-seeded samara, 2 cm long and 1.5 cm broad, with papery, hairy wing surrounding the seed.
