Abies chensiensis

秦岭冷杉 Shensi species

PinaceaeAbies

Shensi fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to parts of China and India. It can grow to over 40 m tall.

  • Needles are 3.5 cm long, bright green, with lines of stomata below (giving undersides a whitish appearance), and are arranged laterally on the branches in several rows or angle upward with a distinct V-shape between the rows. The tip is rounded and often notched on lower branches but can be pointed on upper branches.
  • Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
  • The species is monoecious, with a male pollen cone which is small and inconspicuous, 9 mm long; seed cone is upright, 7–10 cm long and 5 cm across, cylindrical or elongated egg-shaped, initially green and maturing over summer to cinnamon- brown, resinous. Cones are fragmenting, disintegrating to release winged seeds in September (unlike spruce cones which fall from the tree intact).
  • Buds are oval, resinous, 9 mm long; bark is flat gray, with small resin pockets, becoming furrowed with age.
